Project Spotlight: Molly Lollen / A 3D-led exploration into digital portraiture & subcultural identity

Commissioned collaboration with Berlin-based electronic music producer and DJ, Molly Lollen.
A distinct visual alter-ego, designed and 3D-sculpted based on Molly Lollen’s own physical features, is the anchor of a cohesive suite of deliverables: (1)cover artworks, (2)dynamic visual assets for social media & streaming platforms, and (3)custom merch designs – all built around multi-angle variations and novel distortions of the originial character.

I was (and still am) inspired by the techno-organic aesthetics of late-90s’ electronic music videos – where the human form was often dismantled & reassembled through technology, corresponding with the uncanny qualities of digitally-produced music. This classic lineage, in which the artist's own image becomes a visual translation of their music, is the foundation this project builds on.

Utilizing the flexibility of the 3D asset

– Developed as an ongoing collaborative project, the character identity adapts and morphs alongside Molly Lollen’s music. Each new track or release provides a framework to alter the sculpture's geometry, shifting the textures, lighting, and distortion levels to match the specific energy of the sound.

– Given that the sculpture exists in a digital space, it can be endlessly manipulated to fit different mediums – whether that means animating movements and expressions for streaming canvases, or distorting and flattening the head into graphics for silk-printed apparel.

The gallery below shows the current evolution of this visual identity system across digital assets and physical merch.
